Off to the beach!

We headed off to the lake with some ladies from the ward and some of their relatives on Wednesday.  We had 6 moms and I think 22 kids or so as well.  It was crazy, unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of all of them together.  Let me just say my kids are fantastic.  Carson got a little fussy as it got later and later in the day but my kids stayed close and didn't go wandering off.  It was really nice to be able to talk some.  We headed down to the beach about 10:30 and it was chilly in the shade.  There weren't very many people though.  The sand had been freshly combed and it was nice and loose so they could actually dig and play with the sand.  That's what they spent the majority of the trip doing.

Dillon was having a good time running out of the water making the biggest splash he could.

One bucket of water?  No, give me TWO!

Carson is discovering the wonders of standing and playing, and walking!  Last Friday we were at Grandma and Papa H's, they were watching Aunt Anna and Uncle Scott's kids which means Brett (who is 6 weeks older than Carson) was there.  Well guess what, Brett is toddling around everywhere.  This interaction made Carson suddenly interested in walking.  He has been going ever since.  So yesterday (at the lake) was his first time walking on lumpy, bumpy sand.  Today he was walking all over the grass and in shoes!  He has decided that he likes walking better than crawling and will even get up to walk again if he falls or sits down.  He gets better everyday.  In the picture about he is throwing sand into that bucket, he would squat down, get a handful then stand back up and toss it in.

The first thing Kayda did there was start digging a canal.  By the end of the trip the big boys (including Dillon) had turned it into a whole water way.  They would put the spouted buckets at the top and keep them full so the water was constantly running.  It was pretty clever.

Kayda and Olivia.  They're in the same Sunday School class and I've decided that Olivia's mom and I are good friends so it works out great.  Unfortunately they won't go to the same elementary school.

Dillon did this several times.  He thought it was very entertaining.  The only problem was that then he decided it was fun to dump on OTHER people too so we had to have a little discussion about that.

 Dillon and the big boys.

Perfect example of what they were using our spouted buckets.  Carson loved playing in the puddles Kayda kept creating.

Carson and Buster are right about 2 months apart and were playing great together.  This is Olivia's little brother so again... it works out perfect.  They kept trying to give eachother baby kisses.  SUPER cute.

 Then they kept playing together.

...and kept playing with eachother.  Pretty good for two kids right around a year old.

This is Kayda and Olivia's cousin.  Nothing like matching swimsuits to instantly form a bond.  They played together pretty much the whole time once she got there.

Whenever Carson wanted to get to the water he would do the bum scoot.  He would stretch out his legs and pull himself forward on his bottom until he got close enough to the water to kick it.

Two little mermaids...

It was a great time at the lake and I'm totally excited to do something like that with all the ladies again.  Tomorrow we're headed to the splash park.  Hopefully we'll have some pictures of that as well!

Packwood trip

We were only about 30 minutes away from Packwood so we decided to drive up there.  Why would we make a side trip to Packwood?  Because...

Packwood is Baba and Great Grandpa H's old "vacation" home.  They bought it along with Baba's family in the 1960's.  The plan was everybody would contribute financially and put work into it but we know how that goes a lot of the time. So eventually Baba and Great Grandpa H just bought everybody out so it was only theirs, Baba's parents just gave them their portion because of the time/work/money Baba and Great Grandpa H had already put into it.  When they bought the property there weren't any buildings on it so they bought a 100 year old Seattle Water Department shed that used to be by the Cedar River.  They bought it for $5 and hauled it up to Packwood.  They tore it apart and used the wood to build the cabin in the back.  For a while they were using land that wasn't part of their plot because the salesman had shown them the property incorrectly so they had a little bit of moving around to do.  Fortunately it wasn't big.  About a year before Baba retired they added the mobile home seen on the right.  It was sold about 10 years ago.  Baba owned it for about 40 years.  Obviously she wishes it could've stayed in the family but it just didn't work out.

A few extra tidbits Baba shared with me:

During the winter they would put out a salt box for the Elk that roamed through their property (which was quite a lot due to the creek and river on/by the property).

When Mt. St. Helen's blew they had to deal with all the ash.  Baba, Great Grandpa H, Grandpa H and Grandma H had to go up there and clean it up.  There was so much ash they were worried about the trees surviving.  The ash was so thick on one side of the trees that it was smothering them.  So they went to work shoveling, washing, hosing and brushing to save the trees.  Once that was done they worried about the house.  They got as much as they could but some time later when they took the roof off the cabin in order to raise it they found more ash in all the seams.

A little something Grandma H wanted to add:

Before the mobile home was added the only bathroom there was an outhouse.  Prior to the Mt. St. Helen's eruption the river flooded and the outhouse was washed away.  Baba wanted to add to that thought that she lost a cast iron dutch oven also, because it was stored in the outhouse... not entirely sure how that worked.  So all you family members reading this that had the priviledge of being fed while at Packwood, remember that cast iron beast you were fed from and where it stayed when not in use!

Things Daddy shared with me:

On the drive there were a few traditions. One was honking through "honking tunnell" on Cayuse Pass.  The other was laughing hysterically on the bridge over Laughing Water Creek.
There were a lot of things for the family to do in Packwood, the Cowlitz River was right behind the cabin just past a dike, though for many years it ran too quickly to play in it.  There was a creek just behind the cabin that they spent a lot of time playing in (there's not really any water there anymore).  If they wanted to swim they would go to the mouth of the creek to do it.  They would ride scooters through the woods rain or shine for hours upon hours.  Skate creek was also a short distance away so they would fish there (Daddy noted that it was listed as a hidden fishing gem of Washington).  There was also a country club where they could swim in a pool and golf.  There were trails all through the forest that they would explore.  Great Grandpa H used to eat breakfast at Peter's Inn pretty much every morning (we ate dinner there).  During the winter they would go up to White Pass to ski and then head to a pizza parlor to play darts and foozball and such.  There were also day trips to Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helen's, and Packwood Lake.  They also took motorcycles up into the mountains to drive around.  The kids slept in the cabin and the adults all stayed in the mobile home.  At night they would all gather around the firepit, watch a movie, play card games (Great Grandpa H was a master card counter and Pinocle was their game of choice), and Great Grandpa H always made plenty of popcorn to go around.

Some of Daddy's specific memories:

The drive to Packwood is where Daddy discovered that he could NOT drink Orange soda pop and then go on a road trip. It aggravated what car sickness he already had and (this is a little gross) remembers throwing up out the window WHILE driving. He said he just barely got the window down.

Before the roof was raised on the cabin Daddy remembers that Uncle Scott got "lost".  Everyone was freaking out, thinking that he had fallen in the river or gotten lost in the woods.  Turns out he was asleep in the loft tucked away into a corner where no one could see him.

Daddy wanted something to do at the cabin so Great Grandpa H made him a set of wood blocks to build with.  They were kept stored under the deck of the cabin.

He remembers always waking up in the cabin (before the mobile home).  Baba and Great Grandpa H had a trailer and the kids would walk over whenever they woke up and breakfast was always waiting for them.  It was always a big thing to make breakfast outside in the firepit.  It was always a big diverse breakfast.

Playing in the creek they would always be catching frogs or they would get logs and try to sit on the logs to ride down the creek.  They never made it very far but they sure tried.

Over all Packwood was just a place to get away, relax and be close with the family. There wasn't even a phone there until the very end.

Here's the front view of the cabin and mobile home today.  Daddy said that the new owner has connected the mobile home and the cabin via an indoor hallway.  He's also added a hot tub and made some of the paths down to the creek more permanent and useable.  They're very nice and have rock edging.

Here's the view from the dike.  Sorry the trees were kind of in the way.

Walking down the dike (the top use to only have brush but now trees are growing).  We couldn't go to the end because some of the owners have added fences to keep people off.

So we turned the other way and climbed down to this rocky little shore of the Cowlitz River.

Notice on the  right is a little part of the river that gets kind of back filled, there's no current in it.  Daddy's first thought was "We would have been playing in there".

I thought it was so cute that when Kayda and Dillon were climbing on the rocks of the dike Dillon held Kayda's hand to "help" her.  They held hands for several minutes while climbing around on these rocks.

Taidnapam Tacoma Power Park

We went to Taidnapam Tacoma Power Park from Maryhill, we were at Maryhill for 4 nights and stayed at Taidnapam for 3.  I think this may well be my favorite campground now.  It FEELS good.  It has the tall trees around you just like along the west coast but it's WARM.  It was around 80 when we got there and it was nice until we were leaving.  It was sprinkling and a little cooler when we packed up to come home.  But look at it!  Isn't is wonderful!

This was Carson's favorite thing to do.  Anytime you put him down he would crawl for the stairs, climb up and then just hang out!  He didn't want you to touch him, he didn't really want you near him.  He just wanted to be on those stairs!!!  Makes for a nervous Mommy though!

We had a campfire going and Kayda and Dillon were completely ignoring it.  Dillon took over Carson's toy train and Kayda sat and colored, at least she was in front of the campfire.

We took a trip to Packwood (more on that coming up in another post), while we were there we picked up a packet of mystical fire.  Daddy was really excited and tried to make it all magical, unfortunately his timing wasn't very good, it didn't star doing anything for another minute or two, then it was just some blue and green flames (see below).  It was still pretty neat though.

Apparently there is some really good fishing on Riffe Lake.  They had a bridge specifically for that purpose, fish cleaning stations and several boat launches.  Fortunately their swimming area was well away from the fishing area!  The kids had a great time playing around in the water, though Dillon was a little squeamish because there are fish in the water.  It took a while to convince him that the fish would be out in the lake more so he'd go in.

Papa G was entertaining Carson by letting him drop things into the water.

Kayda cracks me up.  She had her back to me so I made her turn so I could see while she dug.  So she turned like this, stuck a big smile on her face and she would stare at me while she leaned forward and dumped her shovel full, keep staring and get more.  She kept going for a minute or two, her head did NOT move.

Daddy found some people using a rope swing and of course had ot give it a shot.

Heading out to the deeper water with Papa G.

Dillon went out to the deeper water with Daddy but for some reason our brave little dare devil wasn't being so brave this trip...

Carson is happy in the water.  End of story.  He will do anything to get to the water and once he is there he is as happy as can be.  He sat and played with these shovels and kicked his feet and the water for probably a good 10 minutes before Papa G decided that Carson needed to go explore the deeper water with him.

The kids had SO much fun riding their bikes down to the swimming area and playground.  We were on our bikes a TON this trip.  They had a great time on the playground especially on the tire swing.

Here the kids are with their gnomes in front of Riffe Lake.

Kayda wasn't really in the mood for pictures...

Hank was with us for the whole trip and did a great job.  This was his favorite spot to sit in the campground.'
