Working Around the House

We have been working on a LOT of projects around the house.  Homeschooling has actually made it much easier to do things during the day.  The kids all play together and often help me cut, build and paint.  Most of the materials we used for outside were of little to no cost which is nice because that way we can do as many projects as we want!

Try to ignore the pile of wood we're still working on using up and the wheelbarrow.
Last year we moved the tree next to the wishing well.  It was in a garden we were eliminating and we moved it to hide the telephone post.  We added the trees on either side of the driveway by the sidewalk, moved the lace-leaf maple down from the rental house, we completely restructured the garden, adding gardens on either side of the house and along the fence.  We reduced the size of the garden by the front porch and eliminated a garden that was initially on the front left.  We got a couple of wagon wheels and the arbor by happy accident.  We also recently beauty barked everything and painted the front door red, along with the porch swing that Daddy got me for my birthday.

This is one of the projects we've been using the reclaimed wood for.  We made two, one for each side of the garage.

This garden was COMPLETELY redone.  We did all of it and made the planter on the porch to make an area we can tuck the stroller, toys, bikes, anything that doesn't get put away in the garage that day!

Another planter we made, along with the milk can, I LOVE those things!  Daddy got me that for something too!

Like our "steps" the rocks were all present in the gardens already, all we did was move them around.  There's another planter we made as well.  I have to get the Jasmine and the climatis in the other planter taped up still.

We used the reclaimed wood to build the little floating deck for the barbecue and the dog run fence.  Though we did end up buying 2x4's and 4x4's for that.  (notice we're ready for summer, we put up the hammock and pool last weekend).  The trampoline's been up for a month.

This was another happy accident with the arbor and wagon wheels.  We had to rebuild the table in the middle and paint it all but we love it!

And my picnic table!  We got it last year after it was too rainy to use it but I sanded it all down and painted it.  Can you tell what my favorite color is?

Here's our little garden!  You can see a blueberry bush, grapes and raspberries.  I still have to put some kind of trellis or something for them but I'll get there.  We have the stuff to finish the last of the fence we just have to get to it.  It will be quick to finish.  You can barely see the pallets in the ground but they're there.  We have to finish filling them up with dirt and then I can plant veggies!  We made the planters for the fruit also.  I still need to make some kind of hangers for some pots for the strawberries and maybe some lavender to encourage the bees to visit!  Gotta love wind storms that blow down sections of fence, a fence company that puts the stuff it takes down out for people who want to grab it and craigslist!  We also built a workbench in the garage and shelving along a whole wall, along with a shelf for some of the kids' toys, though I don't currently have a picture.  The garage is AMAZING now and we've almost entirely cleared out the "bonus" room so we can SLOWLY start working on finishing that space.  Our next project is probably to build a shed though I would LOVE to paint the outside of the house this summer.  There are still so many projects we want to do, it's something that Daddy and I really enjoy doing together.  We made a smaller workbench for the kids and filled a toolbox just for them.  They love to try to build with the scrap wood.

For My Little Ones

This is going to be an unusual post.  It seems we are surrounded by friends challenged with health issues, all with children the same ages as mine.  One has breast cancer that has spread everywhere, one potentially starting the process by going in to have a mass biopsied just after fighting off a series of severe infections, and another with an untreatable brain tumor.  When you stop and think about it you develop a very acute sense of your own mortality.  Despite my good health I was up most of the night obsessing about the reality that I could be taken from my family unexpectedly at any moment.  I don't believe that will happen soon but none the less I have a few things I need to share with my children.

To my babies,

The purpose of this blog is widely varied from the simpler motives like showing you all off and keeping the grandparents and great-grandparents updated and flooded with pictures and stories.  To the more emotionally driven such as giving you pure, undiluted memories to be able to go back to and not just remember through pictures but through words as well.  Occasionally it crosses my mind that it also serves another purpose.  I want a voice should something ever happen to me, I want you to be able to know that the three of you are my world, that I love you and have so much pride in everything you do.  I hope that every post I have written is saturated with my feelings for the three of you, that every word screams of how much a love and treasure you.  Of course, even if I am around, I want you to be able to read it and feel the same.

Each of you are exactly the person I would want in my family.  There is not another soul in the entire universe you could be traded with that would bring me more joy, that I could possibly love more, than each of you.  Remember that, even if I'm furious or sad.  You each teach me so much and bring me thousands of smiles each day.  Granted there are days you make me so angry I can hardly stand it but those are few and far between.  Taking all the little things you bring to me into account there is one outstanding trait that each of you has brought out and developed in me.  I want to share those with you.  Keep in mind that as I write this Kayda, you are 7, Dillon you are 6 and Carson only 2.  I am sure that you will continue to help me grow, even as you grow, in ever changing ways.

Kayda:  You, my darling girl, are the most spiritually aware person I have ever met.  You have helped me develop my FAITH.  You are the reason that we started going to church again, and made it to the temple to be sealed as a family.  You wanted to go to church when we literally never went, always having a desire for something more.  Your understanding of Heavenly Father astounds me.  I am sure that other children are spiritual too since your innocence promotes faith but I can almost see you get physically, emotionally and spiritually filled every time we go to church, as if your gas tank was running low.  Of course, you are not only a spiritually being.  You are very stubborn (sometimes infuriatingly so), very independent, responsible, and structured.  You are very eager to help anyone that needs it and can concentrate on even the smallest of tasks for amazing amounts of time.  You learn extremely quickly and never seem to forget anything.  You seem to prefer the company of adults, wanting to spend recess with the recess teachers, or wanting to be with me or your dad instead of other kids.  I see a lot of myself in you, I have seen the worry that comes with being that independent, have felt the acute rejection that you have occasionally felt and I want to shelter you from all of it.  You are perfect.  You are you and don't you ever, ever, forget that you are exactly who you should be.  You don't need to change a thing for anyone else.  EVER.

Dillon:  My sweet, sweet, boy.  You are such a natural optimist, making friends with about 95% of the people you meet.  When they don't want to play it seems to roll off you like water.  You are always laughing, have an amazing imagination and can play alone for hours or with other children.  You are a little almanac of information.  You love to watch shows about animals, planets, volcanoes etc. and then you will randomly, sometimes months later spout out some of the facts you learned about them.  Your easy laughter, quick smiles, openness to loving people, and constant good spirits have brought me HOPE.  You are eager to make other people happy, don't forget to make you happy too.  You are also very sensitive, you wear your heart on your sleeve and when you are chastised you are crushed.  It breaks my heart when I get mad at you to watch your face fall.  I always end up chasing you up to your room (where you go to hide), holding you and talking to you about what you did wrong and how I still love you no matter what until I can get you to smile again.  I worry that your love of people, eagerness to please and desire to be surrounded by people all the time may get you into bad places.  Always be true to yourself, if it doesn't feel right in your heart then don't do it, no matter what anyone else may say to convince you otherwise.  It won't feel any better later.  You seem to have a pretty well defined version of what is right and wrong, don't let other people confuse it for you.  You are the only person that has to live with yourself.

Carson:  My little stinker!  Perhaps because you are the first child I got to stay home with, or because of the turbulence of my life when you were tiny, my relationship with you is totally different than anything I experience with Kayda or Dillon. Perhaps because I was working, or because they are naturally more independent they could be happy with anyone, anywhere.  You only ever want me.  When you're hurt no one else can calm you, only me.  When you want to sit and watch TV I'm the only one you want to snuggle with.  You don't like it when I go anywhere without you.  You come back to check that I'm still there when you are playing with friends.  When you wake up in the middle of the night, knowing I'm next to you is the only way you'll go back to sleep.  My name is the first word out of your mouth every morning no matter your mood.  You have shown me an immeasurable amount of LOVE and help me to love myself.  You are still so little that I can't write a lot about the person you will become but I can share the tidbits I see.  You are an entertainer, you love to make people laugh.  You have a lot of the same stubbornness your sister does but seem to share a lot of your brother's optimism.  You are the first of my kids to really talk at a young age.  You know exactly what you want and have no fear of letting everyone know.  I'm sure you are just as brilliant as your brother and sister as I have seen evidence of it in many things you do.  I can see your entertaining tendencies getting you in trouble later, remember there is a time for fun and a time to be serious.  I can't give you a lot of advice about your life because you're still so tiny so I'll just remind you as I did your brother and sister to be yourself, always, never try to be anyone else.

Since I'm going through and writing this elaborate thing as if I'll be leaving you soon, which I have no intention of doing, I may as well share my testimony with you.  My testimony was a hard fought thing to come by.  I am what I call a natural skeptic.  The idea of God seems too far away at times to accept.  But through time and experience I have learned that He has a hand in everything in our lives.  There is no such thing as coincidences.  Everything happens exactly the way it has to, He is always looking out for you, even when you've turned your back on him, even if it looks like He has forgotten you it will work out somehow.  He loves you, no matter if other people approve of your choices, no matter if He approves of your choice, no matter if you choose to follow a path that He wants you to take.  It was a difficult place for me to get to but I know that He doesn't want a bunch of clones.   He wants each of us to be ourselves, to have our own personalities, individual thoughts, interests, opinions and goals.  If He wanted clones or thoughtless drones He would have chosen Satan's plan.  I know that Jesus experienced not only pain for our sins but the pain of our bodies and hearts, even pain caused to us by other people.  Jesus can truly understand everything you have or will ever go through, you are never alone.  I know that the Lord answers prayers in many different ways, you can find these answers by reading the scriptures or Ensigns, or even the Friend.  I know that prayers can be answered through other people, through quick memories that you had thought lost and through coincidences.  He is listening, He is there and He is doing everything He can to take care of you, let Him.  I know that paying tithing is a hard thing to do but you will be amazed at what happens when you do.  I know that if a thought keeps nagging you and you can't seem to let it go you need to take action on it, no matter your reservations about doing so.  Heavenly Father would not abandon us to rely on old books, tenuously applied to the challenges of modern life.  He has prophets that He calls to guide us, to give us extra information and help us make sense of old rules being applied to an entirely different way of life.  I know that thought prophets are called of God they are also just men, don't judge God for their choices.  Humans are smart, but we are not God-smart.  We have that potential, don't make the mistake of thinking you know better, I promise you don't.  I've learned that it leads to a happier life to believe there is someone greater, that true happiness can not happen if you are not humble and thankful for the many things the Lord has given us.  There is great power in being something "small".  Pray always literally means pray always.  No, don't get down on your knees.  Talk to Him, even the tiniest of thoughts.  Share yourself with Him, talk things out with him, things will make a lot more sense a lot more quickly than if you try to do it on your own.  I know that when we die we have the opportunity to be together for eternity.  I also know that the kingdom you end up in is inconsequential.  We are taught to strive for the celestial kingdom.  That's where the most perks are.  I also know that in the scriptures it specifically says that you will be placed where you will be happy.  Some people may be happier, more comfortable in one of the lower kingdoms and that's okay.  Heavenly Father is not out to get you.  You will be judged, yes, but you will be judged out of love, to determine where you will be most happy to spend you eternity.  Remember always that He is first and foremost our father.  Don't forget that.  You are loved always by Him and by Christ.  He wants you to be you.

I am sure there are important things that I have forgotten.  Chances are this letter was completely unnecessary but I hope that someday in the future when you look back at it you can know what you all are to me.  There are so many people that love you, let them.

I love you with all my heart, there was a time when you three were the only reason I got out of bed.

Hyak Sno Park

Monday Daddy took the day off work so we could FINALLY go to the snow!  Several of the kids' Christmas gifts were snow gear so that we could go play in the snow.  We just now got to go.  We went to Hyak Sno Park.  We were the only ones there for the majority of the two hours we played.  They had a great time sledding and tried to build snowmen but the snow wasn't wet enough and kept crumbling.  We threw snowballs at each other, sledded and climbed, sledded and climbed, sledded and climbed.  They had a great time.  Two hours was about the limit though because then kids started getting upset too easily.

And here is another random picture I forgot in the last post.  It's been the perfect weather for a campfire so we had a fire!  We thoroughly enjoyed it.  Though it does make me want to go camping even more.

It's Been a While...

First we got Tido, obviously that's the post that's been up FOREVER but here is Carson with Tido!

We switched stools by the island so ALL the kids could sit there... they love it.  It's so cute to watch them.  They all have their designated spots (by them).  They always have to be in this order!

February 9th we actually had enough snow to play in!  The kids made snowmen and had a snowball fight.  They LOVE the snow!

Now the big news.  March 3rd we started homeschooling.  Yes, homeschooling.  I have always been one to quickly say "I couldn't do that" and practically run from the idea.  Well, my sister and one of my best friends homeschool and I couldn't get it out of my head.  Kayda was having a hard time going to school again, the kids were sick like crazy, plus the fact that they're gone for 6 hours and then still have an hour worth of homework, and the kids want to start sports again, Carson is lonely, Kayda had already met her grade one requirements and Dillon's teacher was telling me he knew less than I have seen him demonstrate... It was just too much.  So I was thinking about it pretty much every day.  Then all the sudden it worked out to get a table so our old table went in the dining room, suddenly I Have somewhere to devote to "school".  Then we got some free fencing from someone who's fence blew down so we were able to make a dog run so the kids can go outside all the time without having to worry about dog poop.  I realized that the couple of sick days we tested it out that I felt better too.  I decided to give it a go, after all there are only a few months left of the year anyway.  It has been WONDERFUL.  We do school for a few hours a day.  Then we just get to be together.  The kids are playing better together and being less demanding, even fighting less.  They are also helping me with projects, we've been working outside a lot so we've been learning about bugs, soil and plants.  The kids have always loved helping me in the garden but now they get extra excited about the bugs they see and go on about how that bug helps.  It also means I have more patience for other kids.  Weird as that is, more time with all three of my kids and I get MORE patience.  Weird.  But now, whenever the weather is nice pretty much all the neighbor kids come to play.  Just Friday we had a total of 7 extra kids playing at our house (usually out front).

One of the best parts is watching how much Carson and Dillon are bonding.  They play together HAPPILY almost the entire day.  It's been so great for Carson.  It's been great for ALL of us actually.

Meet Tido!

We got to bring Tido home early!  Last night we went and got him.  He came home, let each of the kids hold him then went into his cage.  He ate and drank right away so that was great.  He also wanted to be out with us!   He came back out with Daddy and I once the kids were in bed and snuggled right in.  He met Hank who was actually afraid of Tido, though very curious (Mingo used to get mad if Hank got close).  I think those two are going to get along just fine! He acts like he's been with us for a long time!  This morning Kayda woke up early, came down, and uncovered him.  When I came down 30 minutes later she was still hanging out next to the cage and he was bobbing on his perch desperately wanting to be with her.  So out he came to have breakfast with us.  He sat on the table while the kids ate.  The kids were having such a great time with us that I tucked him in the stroller with Carson under the weather-shield (to keep them both warm and dry) and off to the bus stop we went.  Hank came too of course!

When we got home he spent some more time in his cage to get used to it, ate some more...but Carson was so excited that I brought him back out.  We took out the small handheld toys which Carson loved exchanging for Tido, even if Tido didn't want to switch.  Then off to the shower.

Tido wasn't so sure about the shower, he liked to put his head in and drink the water but wasn't so fond of the rest of his body getting wet... he'll get used to it!  Here he is soaking wet.  He enjoyed the hairdryer afterward, on low, just long enough to get his downy feathers dry but he practically fell asleep!  Mingo always loved that part too.

He wasn't interested in the fresh fruits or veggies but loved the herbs we're growing, here's Carson feeding him some oregano.

Carson held Tido more than I did today!  Every time I had the bird Carson would come over and say "up" and Tido would do exactly that.  Carson got a kick out of it when Tido would climb up to his shoulder.  He got some more downtime on top of his cage then it was time to get kids from the bus.  Carson insisted that we bring Tido but Tido didn't seem to enjoy the stroller arrangement so I put on my scarf and Tido snuggled in it under my chin to and from the bus stop.  He actually seemed to enjoy it!

Kayda and Dillon had to hold Tido right away of course.  These kids are in love with this bird!  Fortunately he seems to be pretty fond of them too.  It's been a busy transition but that's what our life is and Tido seems to be loving it.

For future notice.  There will probably be a lot more pictures of Hank and Tido.  Normally I focus on the kids but I can only seem to find a handful of pictures of Mingo and it's a HUGE regret that I don't have more so even if you just read this for the kids.... too bad.  Maybe I'm becoming one of the crazy people who treat their animals like kids.

Coming Soon to a Family Near You!!!

We're getting a new bird!  We have spent a while mourning the loss of Mingo, Kayda in particular struggled with it.  A few weeks after he died we realized that we wanted another bird.  That we loved having Mingo and that we wanted to be parrot owners again.  So I set about researching.  I decided that a Meyer's parrot was the best option.  They are smaller than Mingo was, tend to be more even tempered and love LOTS of people (provided you socialize them just like any other animal).  Now, I don't believe in coincidences any longer.  That has been beaten out of me many a time.  So when I started searching for a breeder (pet stores wouldn't sell these birds, they're pretty hard to get) and there was only one with an online presence, which happened to be about 20 minutes from our house, and they had two baby Meyer's coming (one of which was already purchased).  I knew I had to go.  We waited until after the babies got there and headed off to visit on the 11th of this month.

Here are the two babies, the bigger one is two days older than the other.  We took our whole family to go see the birds, we held many different birds but none of them sparked even the tiniest of interest.  The only one that got a reaction was a male eclectus (Mingo's breed).  She gave one to me to hold and I nearly broke down.  Anyway, we went into another room where the Meyer's were, they had arrived the day before so they isolate the babies until they know they are healthy.  We were able to hold both Meyer's.  The reason they had them was because someone specifically requested a Meyer's, there were two so the breeder went ahead and got both.  We were to get second choice... I loved one of them, the older of the two, it let Carson hold it and didn't freak out when all of the kids gathered around it.  The younger one was more skittish, trying to fly off even when it was a calm, quiet adult holding it.  We decided that if we could have the older one we wanted it in our family.  The other one we would have to visit more to decide.  We didn't think we had much hope, thinking that the older one was so much more appealing.  Somehow the other couple chose the younger one!  Again, I don't believe in coincidences.
Here's our new bird.  We just found out today that it's a boy (they have to dna test most parrots, Mingo was one of the few breeds that you don't).  We've been able to visit him several times but he is still being weaned.  He will be coming home on February 1st.  His name is Tido.  His hatch date is 11/7/13.  Kayda is very excited that his "birthday" is in her month.
